9. What’s needed to get started?
- Hippotherapy at Big Stride Therapy is an Occupational Therapy session, where the movement of the horse is utilized as a treatment tool, as part of the overall treatment plan. It is a full one on one Occupational Therapy session with specific therapy goals as required. The therapy must be deemed medically necessary and is prescribed by the doctor.
2. What ages do you treat:
- Therapy can be started at any age, however, using the horse as a part of the treatment session, is usually not until age 2. We work in pediatrics only.
3. Are sessions covered by Insurance?
- Occupational Therapy is billed to insurance or Medicaid just like any therapy.
- There is a separate facility fee that is billed to you for the use of the facilities and equines. Barn fees are $120 per month for 4 sessions.
4. What kind of insurance is accepted?
- Big Stride Therapy accepts all insurances but your therapy benefits depend on your policy. Big Stride Therapy is in network for Blue Cross Blue Shield.
- Katie Beckett waiver and Straight Medicaid are also accepted. If your child is also getting OT at another clinic, you will need to determine the dates and units of the Prior Approval.
5. Looking for PT in Hippotherapy?
- Big Stride Therapy only provides Occupational Therapy.

6. What days are available at which locations?
- Therapy is offered at the Duluth location at Fairhope Stables on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
- Therapy is offered at the Canton location at Mariposa farms on Tuesdays only.
7. How long are sessions?
- Therapy sessions are typically once per week for 50-60 minutes.
8. Do you do therapeutic riding, equine therapy or other horse therapy?
- Big Stride Therapy does not offer recreational riding or adapted riding lessons. For adapted riding, contact Bethany at beats-inc.org
9. What’s needed to get started?
- Fill out the Contact us information and include the child's name, age, disability and/or needs and your available times for sessions. Big Stride Therapy will contact you to review available time slots.
